The strategy to fight Cafasso's online harrassment, stalking and threats is emerging. You can see Causal Nexus talking about it, 10-31 and others.

This kid talks about how he was harrassed by a bully at school, and how he ended up winning over him.

That is what our strategy is. We are not victims of this man, we are his 'opponents'. To me, Cafasso isn't a 'bully' -he's a STALKER. With a STALKER, a stalker gets kicks out of invading peoples' privacy and causing them fear. Cafasso has already proven that he's dangerous, but the problem is...you can't believe a single word he writes or says.

There is one stalker, and one victim. The stalker gets his jollies by causing fear.

So let's stop being afraid. I think the blogs that have gone up are the beginning of a turnaround in how people are starting to respond to this man. Regardless as to the names of his 'victims', the man thinks that by instilling fear into his opponents, he can get them to do his bidding.

But the kid in the video learned that you don't have to bow down to someone's perceived powers of persuasion when they're using bullying techniques. The best thing to do is...stand up for yourself.

How to Stop Stalkers

Take Action
Start telling others about the stalker. Even if you have responded to him positively in the past, don't let that stop you from taking action now. Tell people what is going on. If you did go out with him, it was a mistake, but you can fix that. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes. Learn from it and move on.
Keep a Diary
Record every incident, no matter how trivial. Stalkers use the triviality of their actions as a defense: "What, I'm not allowed on a public street?". You need to establish a pattern of behavior. Record dates, times, places, witnesses, phone numbers, addresses, everything you can think of. If this problem has been ongoing, record previous events to the best of your ability. Record every incident as it happens. Call the police every time you are contacted. They may say they can't send a police car or an officer for an obscene phone call. If that happens, say "Yes, I know; I just need you to make an official note of this incident so I can prove a pattern of behavior."
Get More People Involved
Contact your local women's center and tell them you're being stalked. Bring in your record of the incidents. Advocates who work at women's centers have experience with stalkers, and may even know the person who is bothering you. They also know the police, the sheriff, and the county prosecutors. They will have resources, contacts, and advice that will help immensely. They will know the laws in your state, county, and city. Once you involve professionals in this problem, the situation changes from you against the stalker to the System against the stalker. My information is based on what I know about the laws in Minnesota. Please contact a shelter or crisis center in your town for the best help and information.
File a Restraining Order
If the stalker is a stranger, you can file a Harassment Restraining Order (HRO), which is used when you don't have a significant or legal relationship with the other person. Make sure that your advocate helps you fill out the forms, using your documented patterns of incidents. A judge will look over your application, see how many times you have been bothered, and will grant or not grant your HRO request. When it has been granted, every incident of stalking is considered a violation of the order and is a crime.
Facts about HROs
- Make sure your advocate tells you what an HRO can and cannot do. Statistically, when an HRO is served, that can be the most dangerous time for you. Work with your advocate to make sure you stay safe. Evaluate the level of danger and make a safety plan accordingly.
- Many times, an HRO will cause a power shift in the relationship, and the stalker will leave you alone. It's not fun for him anymore, because you are no longer a safe and easy target.
- Remember that a restraining order will not stop a stalker who doesn't care about it. The advantage to an HRO is that it will mobilize all of law enforcement to be on your side. The police must pay attention and respond to any violation of the order.
- Penalties for violating an HRO will vary, depending on your state or country. Repeated violations may result in harsher penalties. Remember, the more violations he has on his record, the better your case.
- The HRO is between your stalker and the judge. If the stalker violates the HRO, he is violating the judge's order, not yours. The only way the order can be modified is if you go to court to change it.
- The HRO is against your stalker, not against you. Sometimes the stalker will threaten, "I'll show up where you are, then I'll report YOU for violating the HRO!". Sorry, no, the HRO is one way only. It's impossible for you to violate the HRO. Sometimes a judge will order mutual HROs, against both parties, but this is rare. Incidentally, if the stalker makes a threat like that, he has already violated the HRO. Report it.
- No witnesses? His word against yours? After the HRO is granted, that doesn't matter. The police have to believe you.
- Continue to report every single incident, no matter how small. If you don't report every incident, the stalker may begin pushing the boundaries, seeing how far you will let him go before he gets into trouble. Develop a hair-trigger response and report the slightest violation.
Be With Other People
Stay with others as much as you possibly can. If an incident occurs, you will have plenty of witnesses. Statistically, you are much safer in a group anyway.
Don't Show Fear
Refusing to show fear may be one of your best weapons. The stalker enjoys causing fear. Talk to your advocate about your specific case to see if this would be a good approach to take.

Follow these steps and you can stop stalkers. If we all work together we can make the world a safer place.

I think this is sound advice. Those people who are on the blogs should be picking up their phones and going down to the police station to file harrassment restraining orders on Cafasso. We can use the address at the Senton Hotel and the address in Carteret New Jersey that he's not living at anymore.

On the Lower East Side he is Cafasso! In Little Italy, he's Big Joey Mosca. When he steps into the Village, he is Jay Mosca! When he pulls into Louisiana after Katrina he's Jay Cafasso! When he hits the steps of the St. Patrick's Chancery for the Catholic Charities - too close to the UN - he is Lt. Col Blackwood!

That little blurb is from The Way I Like It, but I think I saw it somewhere else on one of these other blogs. We're all going to be bringing this stuff up, I'm convinced of that. Imagine it what it would be like to be pretending to be another individual with another name and another set of credentials. (Although Blackwood and Cafasso are very similar; one has a degree from Texas A&M and the other has a degree from Brown-something he stole from his dead father's resume.) I just find it hard to wrap my head around this one. What a twisted life he must lead--no wonder some people are concluding he's an absolute psycho!

I knew about Your Worst Nightmare, and the second one The Way I Like It....those two are way out there. Woops, I've got to put Tracking Cafasso up there. Definitely. Just struggle with the damned code and every time I get involved, something in my personal life pulls me off the computer.

All of them are in the readings I cite below, but i neglected any in the blogroll. The two girls are a little radical for my taste, although fitting for Halloween. I guess.

It's difficult to track all that's cropping up, but I have to shout out to cao for putting up the bubbleshare picture deal album thing and letting me know about it.

I've been going through the Joe Cafasso blogs

It appears as though some blogs are on the radar for Cafasso posts now. This is a good thing; I was concerned that we'd be working toward absolutely nothing, boxed in completely from the internet world. We've got Tracking Cafasso, Cao's blog, Your Worst Nightmare, and The Way I Like It coming up on the first couple of pages in technorati for a Joe Cafasso search.

In bloglines, and google blog search, the results are puzzling. I will see if I can upload images later...the wife is calling, I have some things to attend to. Every time I start turning something up, I get called away. Will try to get back to this tomorrow some time, and continue pointing out the skewed results.

My initial take on this loopy phenomenon is this: we need to check each other's blogs, and repeat the information so that the searches will pick it up. Otherwise, we'll be straitjacketed into search engine hell, and nobody will learn the details of this story. These engines are not showing that we're linking to each other, so I don't understand how this works, or how to improve the results. Blogsnot sucks, of course, that goes without saying.

Update: Checking bloggers search, google blog search and blogger beta blog search. For the first two, as you can see, the results are the least impressive over technorati and blogger beta. Blogger beta search, however, does a much better job. Conclusion: With blogger beta as the exception (and how many people use that, or know it exists?) few if any of these search engines actually doing what their claim is in a search for information in the blogs about Cafasso; there is no thorough search for what bloggers are writing about this character that reveals all the information available. So the hypothesis and solution I propose above still stands.

Just a few observations about Joe Cafasso

Joe Cafasso -aka a bunch of names he made up like Jay Mosca or Gerry P. Blackwood- seems to have built himself a long list of devastated people in his wake, evidenced by some of what I was reading over at Tracking Cafasso. There's an example at that blog of someone who had a Cingular account and he actually had the audacity and nerve to reroute the phone bill to another address! He thinks people are dumb!

I was also reading over at Your Worst Nightmare, and his Uncle is the notorious Angelo "jerry" Mosca of Rhode Island fame involved in the bribery scandal some time ago. Joe Cafasso might want to pass himself off to be some kind of elitist, but in reality, he's a third rate italian thug who thinks thuggery is the way to get things done. Several blogs on Joe Cafasso have popped up, it must have occurred to other people the same way it did with me; something has to be done about him.

For starters, if the site stat readings over at the Carteret Con Artist keep showing Columbia University, we should start calling the school and demanding that the guy stop using their network to stalk people.

I find it curious that the technorati readings that are displayed over at the Carteret Con Artist don't even show that blog over there. Seems to me that google and other search engines and supposed tools that are at our disposal are not showing accurate results.

I did notice today, though, that you can configure a google search engine to your own liking. I'm going to look into doing that, because that seems to be a smart way to get the information you're looking for without the bullshit filtering that the New York Times mentioned in this article.

Not that I'm a complainer or anything, but gobbletygork hasn't been mentioned in either the google searches or technorati. So something is definitely up.

Hey what is the connection between Joe Cafasso and Columbia University?

I see a lot of examples of it out there. Like here, here, here, here, here. That's just at one blog, but another example is: here . One can only assume with some of what's been written about Stuporpatriots being written by Joe Cafasso (from witnesses who've seen him posting to the blog), that there is a connection between his cyberstalking women and others and Columbia University's turning a blind eye to the fact that he does it with their own equipment.

Cyberstalking is clearly against the law, and New York has some explicit wording to that effect:

States in the U.S. have begun to address the use of computer equipment for stalking purposes:

Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire and New York have included prohibitions against harassing electronic, computer or e-mail communications in their harassment legislation.

I'm not certain if this legislation has been passed in New York, but it would be to strengthen that which is already on the books:

Federal laws have been passed in order to protect people from stalkers like Cafasso (at usdoj.gov):

Federal cyberstalking laws
Federal law provides a number of important tools that are available to combat cyberstalking. Under 18 U.S.C. 875(c), it is a federal crime, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, to transmit any communication in interstate or foreign commerce containing a threat to injure the person of another. Section 875(c) applies to any communication actually transmitted in interstate or foreign commerce - thus it includes threats transmitted in interstate or foreign commerce via the telephone, e-mail, beepers, or the Internet.
Although 18 U.S.C. 875 is an important tool, it is not an all-purpose anti-cyberstalking statute. First, it applies only to communications of actual threats. Thus, it would not apply in a situation where a cyberstalker engaged in a pattern of conduct intended to harass or annoy another (absent some threat). Also, it is not clear that it would apply to situations where a person harasses or terrorizes another by posting messages on a bulletin board or in a chat room encouraging others to harass or annoy another person (as in the California case, discussed infra.).
Certain forms of cyberstalking also may be prosecuted under 47 U.S.C. 223. One provision of this statute makes it a federal crime, punishable by up to two years in prison, to use a telephone or telecommunications device to annoy, abuse, harass, or threaten any person at the called number.⁽¹⁰⁾ The statute also requires that the perpetrator not reveal his or her name. See 47 U.S.C. 223(a)(1)(C). Although this statute is broader than 18 U.S.C. 875 -- in that it covers both threats and harassment -- Section 223 applies only to direct communications between the perpetrator and the victim. Thus, it would not reach a cyberstalking situation where a person harasses or terrorizes another person by posting messages on a bulletin board or in a chat room encouraging others to harass or annoy another person. Moreover, Section 223 is only a misdemeanor, punishable by not more than two years in prison.
The Interstate Stalking Act, signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, makes it a crime for any person to travel across state lines with the intent to injure or harass another person and, in the course thereof, places that person or a member of that person's family in a reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury. See 18 U.S.C. 2261A. Although a number of serious stalking cases have been prosecuted under Section 2261A, the requirement that the stalker physically travel across state lines makes it largely inapplicable to cyberstalking cases.

Kathryn Cramer refers to the 'new attack dogs' and separates herself from whoever is writing there. I'm sorry, I don't know where they are. She should link to them so people can see what is being written there. The only ones I'm aware of are Carteret Con Artist and some things that Cao has written at Cao's blog, but those are the only two, at least that I know of. Cao has been around for a while as far as I can tell, so Cao's blog doesn't fit into the description of 'new attack dog blog' or whatever it was she said about it. If I find any, I'm going to link them in my sidebar.

I know there are search tools out there, I'll have to do some more investigation to see what other blogs there might be which are exposing what appears to be Joe Cafasso's long history of deception.

I don't know what I can add except federal law prohibits cyberstalking, this Violence Against Women Act is thorough. Cafasso's talking about Cao being 'a candidate for spousal abuse' or something with that sort of ring to it- certainly shows us that he doesn't have a problem with it under certain circumstances, we have women who've come forward who've talked about his physical violence toward them. The mensa girl is actually in hiding as a result of it; he destroyed her life. It isn't difficult or crazy to then arrive at the conclusion that his cyberstalking could go even further to in-person, in-your-face physical violence toward someone. That seems to be the chain of events in other cases of cyberstalking; the perp finds the woman and it eventually leads to his discovering where she lives, and things escalate from there. Cafasso's stalking isn't limited to women on the internet; he's just widened his repertoire to be inclusive of that technique. Fox News talks about this law here:

Fiery debate surrounds Section 113 of the Violence Against Women Act--a last minute addition to the act titled Preventing Cyberstalking.

Is the new law 'evil' or merely redundant? Will it destroy Internet communications as we know them or have no effect? Do members of Congress actually read the measures upon which they vote?

Section 113 was signed into law by President Bush on January 5. It amends 47 U.S.C. 223, the telecommunications harassment statute that is rooted in the Communications Act of 1934.

The telecommunications statute prohibits anyone from using a telephone or a telecommunications device "without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person."

In application this has meant that you cannot anonymously annoy another person through the phone lines. Penalties include two years in prison and onerous fines.
Section 113 amends the statute to include "any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet."

On January 9, electronic-freedom guru Declan McCullagh published an article entitled "Create an e-annoyance, go to jail." Almost instant furor ensued.
McCullagh opened by declaring, "It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity."

McCullagh and those who agree with his interpretation of Section 113 represent 'the law is evil and will damage the Internet' side of the debate. Their warnings revolve around the two "A"s: "annoyance" and "anonymous."

First Amendment scholar Eugene Volokh argues that Section 113, if consistently applied, will criminalize annoying Web speech that is also meant to inform. For example, the anonymous creator of a blog that criticizes a politician may sincerely wish the target to become uncomfortable enough with public backlash to change his or her behavior. If the site engages in damaging lies, then existing libel laws apply.

Otherwise the right to state opinions under a pen name has been generally recognized by the First Amendment, with certain exceptions such as threats.

And that is where Cafasso has crossed the line, you see. The Stuporpatriots is a website where he has harangued and harrassed since its inception all supporters of Jack Idema. And it isn't my intent on this blog to take up that story; it's my intent here to concentrate on the outrageous and sometimes illegal behavior of Joe Cafasso.

For certain women, that law might be a Godsend, but where Cafasso is concerned, even though he's a dirtbag with not a pot to piss in, it would have to be pursued through the courts in order for it to do any good. His brazen attitude demonstrates he knows he doesn't have a thing for people to sue him for in court; the only people that will be able to accomplish something through the courts are those who want to force him to stop. A serial stalker, though, rarely gives up what turns him on. The beginning for these women from where I sit should be filing a TRO with accompanying documentation. As far as I can tell, there are at least a few who have a good case for pursuing this to force him to stop.

Another interesting article here talking about a California cyberstalker who was nailed as a result of related legislation:

Prosecutors said the jailed suspect, Gary Steven Dellapenta, posted messages under the unidentified woman's name. The notes, which appeared in America Online chat rooms and on the Net, said the woman had an unfulfilled sexual fantasy of being raped. The posts included her name, address, phone number, and instructions for disarming her home-security system, prosecutors said.
At various times since the posts began early last year, six men did show up at the woman's apartment in North Hollywood, police said. They didn't gain entry, however. Dellapenta, first arrested in November, was charged with stalking; using a computer to commit fraud, deceive or extort; and solicitation to commit sexual assault, charges that could bring seven years in prison. Dellapenta has pleaded not guilty and is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail.
"Men would come to her door in the middle of the night," the victim's mother told The Los Angeles Times. "She got dozens of calls by men who would leave filthy, disgusting messages."
Her daughter became so desperate that she placed a note on her apartment door saying the Internet ads were fakes posted by someone out to harm her. But new messages would be posted, saying that the note itself was part of the fantasy and to disregard it, the mother told The Times.
She added that her daughter was so terrified that she lost her job and dropped from 130 pounds to just 95 pounds today.
California's cyber-stalking law took effect 1 January and is similar lto statutes on the books in Alaska, Connecticut, New York, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.
